WEATHER IN SPAIN

Asturias is a prehistoric land as illustrated by the many cave paintings throughout the region. Iron-age Celtic tribes, who inhabited the country, successfully fought off the Romans and the Moors. At one point, Asturias was one of the last remnants of Germanic Spain; for this reason, the heir to the Spanish throne automatically takes the title of Prince of Asturias. Asturias is scattered with historical sites and monuments, many of them pre-Romanesque. The Cathedral in the Capital city Oviedo, built during the 15th and 16th century is a fine example of late Gothic architecture. During the 18th Century, Asturias became one of the main sites of the Spanish Enlightenment. Today Asturias has a population of over 1.1 million inhabitants. Major cities include Gijón, Oviedo and Avilés.
Asturias is one of the most culturally significant regions in Spain. Oviedo, the capitol city has many historic architectural sites, as well as concerts, opera, theater, and exhibitions. Asturias is known for its fine beef, seafood and cheeses, which are all nicely accompanied by the locally produced cider (sidra.) Eco-tourism is a major industry in Asturias and there is something for everyone. From freshwater fishing to snow skiing, the variety of sporting and leisure activities is endless. Asturians are truly proud of their region and even have their own language, Bable (pronounced ba-blay). Their culture has distinct Celtic influences therefore the bagpipe and traditional costumes are just as common in Asturias as Scotland.
